This structure is of the through type, where one channel is open at both ends and the other channel is sealed at both ends with sealing elements (or plate edges) for welding. The fluid in the open channel flows axially, and the fluid in the closed channel flows spirally, with the two fluids transferring heat in the wrong direction. This structure can be used as a condenser and reboiler, or as a top condenser and bottom reboiler in a distillation column.
